We now have very little left in the way of real wildflower meadows in Somerset due to the dramatic changes in farming practices since the war. With the decline in meadows a corresponding loss of other species and general biodiversity has followed with it

Increasing concern for wildlife generally and the simple  beauty of a traditional Meadows has meant an encouraging number of people are looking to restore or create a new meadows on a garden scale or in a field that has come out of more intensive agricultural use

Meadow creation is never easy especially on ground that has been heavily fertilised, re-seeded and 'improved' and it is impossible to create genuine meadows without the associated hay making or grazing that relates to them. But when this traditional management is not available many options and techniques have now been established that allow the creation of diverse, flower rich grass areas that people and wildlife find so attractive

On either a small or large scale it is possible to bring colour into the design of garden areas or the wider farm or smallholding landscape with annual seed mixtures

A wide range of annual seeds and mixes are now available that offer very attractive colour while acting as a very good source of summer food for bees and other insects and later seeds for birds during the winter months

These sort of mixtures are an excellent, immediate addition to the landscape when you are establishing an Apiary providing nearby food for bees while other more permanent meadow and orchard projects are underway

I generally design meadows and other flowering areas as part of the wider design for a garden or landscape such as the areas surrounding new ponds or lakes and I am able to offer the following advice and services:
